Iowa has a proud history in the Civil War. Iowa Regiments fought at Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, and Atlanta. Many were on the March to the Sea and the March through the Carolinas. Others served west of the Mississippi in Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana.

          Shortly after the War and continuing to the present, monuments or memorials have been erected to commemorate the service of Civil War Veterans. We have identified over 400 monuments in Iowa. Please take an opportunity to visit these memorials to honor the Veterans who fought and died for their country.

We have taken photographs of all known Iowa monuments with a brief written description including directions about how to locate the monument. We have also added Iowa monuments outside the state, such as those on battlefields at Vicksburg and Shiloh. The definition of monument is fairly broad as cannons, GAR Halls, stained glass windows and historic homes are included along with the traditional monuments or memorials.
