This is a 6-pounder bronze field gun, M1861. It is from the Cyrus Alger & Co., number 132. It is on loan from the Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. The plan is to return it to the cemetery when there is a cannon mount or carriage for the cannon. There is a very similar cannon currently in the GAR section of Aspen Grove. Thanks to Mike Cunningham for notification of this cannon.

Close to the impressive 25-foot monument is a 6-pounder field gun, M1841. The photos show the monument and the cannon in the GAR Section. The photos were taken 9/1/20. The Cemetery is in the north part of town. Take Osborn Street - then west on Corse Street to the Cemetery. The General John Corse Mausoleum and General Karl Matthies Memorial are nearby.

Old Fort Madison Site - Lee County - Fort Madison - 40.629750 by -91.304083

There are two cannons at the site of Old Fort Madison. The cannons flank the chimney that remains from the old fort. These are 6 pounder bronze field guns, M1841. The location is easily confused with the reconstructed Old Fort Madison which is in a different location in Riverview Park. This site is close to the street (Highway 61) and RR tracks. Photos taken 12/29/07 and 10/5/20.

Monumental Park - Madison County - Winterset - 41.334733 by -94.011833

This monument, dedicated on October 17, 1867, was one of the earliest erected in Iowa. There are inscriptions on the four sides. It is a 14-foot marble monument on a 5-foot limestone base. The cannons, included in 1878, are 6 pounder bronze field guns, M1841, painted black. Two were made at Ames Manufacturing Co., one in 1855 and one in 1861. Another was cast at Cyrus Alger & Co. in 1861, the fourth is from William D. Marshall & Co., cast in 1862. Monumental Park is one block east of the Town Square in Winterset.
Recently, several very nice enhancements have been made including the new entrance, concrete foundations for the cannons and the cannonball stack for each cannon.
A remarkable book, "A Monumental Place" by Town Historian Walt Libby, was published in 2008. He documents a great deal about the monument and the park from the origination to the present day. Photos taken 10/27/09, 6/16/14, and 6/27/17.

Shown is a 6-pounder bronze field gun, M1841 from Cyrus Alger & Co. in 1854. The cannon photo was taken 5/25/08.

This 6-pounder bronze field gun, Model 1841, is located in the office of Dr. David Davidson, a dentist in Urbandale. The cannon and carriage are in excellent condition. It also shows the year of manufacture in 1864 and "173", the foundry number. "2 Ohio" is marked on the face of the cannon. Dr. Davidson is the owner of the cannon. Photos taken 5/24/12.
