Veterans Memorial Park is a nice little park in Oakland Cemetery with monuments to veterans of all wars. The Civil War monument was dedicated in 1914. The soldier is of marble and 6 feet in height. There are identical inscriptions on the front and back that read "In God We Trust - WRC - In Memory of all who followed our Flag in Defense of our Country - 1914." The matching cannons are 1.5-inch Maxim Nordenfeldts - used on ship as anti-torpedo boat guns from about 1890-1915. Thanks to Tom Batha for information and identification of these cannons. The cemetery is on the east side of Centerville - just north of Highway 2. The park is on the west side of the cemetery. Photos taken 8/1/08 and 3/4/09.

Fairview Cemetery - Story County - Story City - 42.192183 by -93.590783

At the entrance to the Story City or Fairview Cemetery is a Maxim-Nordenfelt 6-pounder naval gun. It is said to be a trophy of the Spanish-American War. The cemetery is in the NE part of town. Take Grand north from Broad (the main E/W street). Photos taken 7/12/17.
