Grant - Civil War Monument GPS Coordinates: 41.140933 by -94.991254

This very attractive monument is located in the Grant Cemetery. It is a 15 foot granite obelisk dedicated in 1908. Inscriptions include mention of the GAR Post and the Ladies of the GAR Circle. There is also a Veterans Monument. Nearby are benches dedicated to Veterans. Many gravesites of CW Veterans are in the area of the Monument. The Cemetery is located just west of the town of Grant (named for General U. S. Grant) and on the west side of Highway 71. The Monument is on the north side of the Cemetery. Photos taken 8/19/14. Red Oak - Civil War Soldier in Cemetery GPS Coordinates: 41.022183 by -95.221000

This is an impressive monument of granite with a bronze soldier holding a flag. It is about 20 feet high. It was dedicated in 1907 by the GAR and WRC. It is located in Evergreen Cemetery, 1800 N 8th Street, on the east side of Red Oak. Take 8th Street south off Highway 34. At the main entrance – go straight east to the monument. Red Oak - Soldier Tombstone Monument GPS Coordinates: 41.024000 by -95.219317

This life sized bearded soldier sets atop the grave of Pvt. Gerrat Diedericks (1824-1898) of Co. K, 4th Missouri Infantry. This was a regiment that served for 3 months which included the Battle of Wilson's Creek on August 10, 1861. Pvt. Diedericks was born in Holland. The monument is located in the NE corner of Evergreen Cemetery, 1800 N 8th Street, on the East side of Red Oak. Take 8th St off Highway 34. Villisca - Civil War Monument GPS Coordinates: 40.939850 by -94.974516

This granite obelisk is about 18 feet high. The inscription on the west face is difficult to read, "Sacred to the memory of Union Soldiers who offered their lives in defense of their country...erected by Villisca WRC...1894." It is in the cemetery NE of town. Take 5th Avenue north to the cemetery. The monument is in the north section of the cemetery by the flagpole. Photo taken in July 2010.


Villisca - Dog Tent Memorial GPS Coordinates: 40.939100 by -94.975016
This unique memorial/tombstone is similar in dimension to the Civil War "dog tent." A canteen and knapsack are hung over the front. Captain William W. Ellis, a member of the 8th Pennsylvania and 61st Pennsylvania Infantry Regiments, is buried here. He served first in the 8th PA, a 90 day regiment. He then joined the 61st after completing his first enlistment. He died September 16, 1903. The cemetery is in the NE part of town - take 5th Avenue north. The location is in the west central part of the cemetery. Photo taken 5/2/08.
