Eldora - Civil War Soldier Monument and Cannon at Courthouse GPS Coordinates: 42.360183 by -93.098583

The soldier monument is “white bronze” or zinc and 35 feet high. About 510 soldiers of the region are named around the base. There are panels of Grant, Washington, Farragut and Lincoln. The Grant panel is a replacement. It was dedicated in 1886. In the 1980’s the monument was sagging and there was danger of losing it. It was taken apart and concrete was used on the inside as a foundation. Today there is some separation and cracking of the white bronze.
The cannon is a 3.67 inch Army Parrott rifle cast at the West Point Foundry in 1863 with a carriage and limber in great condition. The markings on the cannon are highlighted. In the early 1990’s, the late Gene Farmer rebuilt the carriage and limber. The cannon sets under a shelter for protection from the elements. Mr. Farmer had led efforts to provide the shelter along with restoration of the cannon and monument. The location is on the east side of the courthouse. Photos taken 1/27/08 and 5/19/20. Also included is an old undated copy of a postcard showing the cannon in a different location and without the shelter. Thanks to Danny Krock for providing this.

Eldora - GAR Monument GPS Coordinates: 42.361200 by -93.089583

This is a monument to the unknown dead. Dates of various wars are inscribed on the monument. It is granite about 4 feet high. The cemetery is on the east edge of town on Highway 175. The monument may be difficult to locate within the cemetery. The easiest way is to take 6th Street north – then turn right into the cemetery – then as you go east on the cemetery road, the monument will be on your right next to the road. Photo taken 5/19/20.

Iowa Falls - Civil War Monument GPS Coordinates: 42.520750 by -93.264283

This Civil War plaque is located in Estes Park in Iowa Falls. It was dedicated in 1932. Thanks to Ron Rittel for information about this monument including a copy of the original documents. While the boulder was donated, the total cost to move the boulder, pay for the plaque and erect the monument was $74. It is located in the SE corner of Estes Park which is a block north of the business district at corner of Estes and Stevens Streets. Photos taken 5/19/20. In 2015 a copy of an old postcard of a Dahlgren cannon was received from Danny Krock. The inscription on the card says that it was located in Central Park and we believe this is a previous name for Estes Park. The cannon is not there today and we presume it was melted for scrap during World War II.
