Casey - GAR Memorial Oakwood Cemetery - GPS Coordinates: 41.497516 by -94.508833

This monument had been in poor condition but was repaired in 2016. It is about 12 feet high. The only inscriptions are “G.A.R.” and “Memorial.” The monument was dedicated on Memorial Day, 1916 by the GAR Stanfield Post #359. In 2016 a wonderful chain saw carving of a Civil War Soldier by artist Dave Bussard was placed by the monument. See photos of the restored monument, the carving and the old photo at the dedication with many Civil War Veterans. Also, photos from the re-dedication of the monument on June 4, 2016. The cemetery is south of Casey – turn east on E Hayes Drive (also called 105th Street) and follow it to Oakwood cemetery. Take the second entrance into the cemetery and the monument is visible from the entrance. The town of Casey is in Guthrie County but this cemetery is actually over the line in Adair County. Thank you to Dan Rittel for information and photos.

Casey - Herron Memorial Bridge - GPS Coordinates: 41.511110 by -94.499167

Highway 6 runs coast-to-coast and is named the Grand Army of the Republic Highway. The Iowa SUVCW has named 11 bridges on the Highway after Iowa CW Generals. There are also 29 GAR Highway markers across the state - an example is listed under Oakland in Pottawattamie County. This bridge is named after Francis J. Herron. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism at the Battle of Pea Ridge in March, 1862. He led a divison at Vicksburg and had commands mostly west of the Mississippi. He became a Major General at age 26. This bridge crosses the Middle River just east of Casey on Old Highway 6. Photo taken 5/12/12.

Guthrie Center - Civil War Soldier Monument - GPS Coordinates: 41.678000 by -94.501950

This is an excellent monument with a Civil War soldier and names engraved of veterans from this area. There are over 700 names listed. It is granite and about 20 feet high. Many of the names are soldiers from the Iowa 4th and 29th Infantry Regiments but there are many from other Iowa regiments and from other states. It is located in a little park NE of the business district and near the courthouse. At one time it was next to the old courthouse which burned down in 1963. The first photo was taken 4/19/10. On 10/4/15 the monument was re-dedicated by members of the SUVCW. The second photo shows a firing salute by the Guthrie Center American Legion. The third photo is of members of the SUVCW and its Auxiliary. On a return visit 6/29/18, it was noted that a nice Veterans area had been included west of the monument.
