Chapin - Veterans Memorial at Old Chapin Cemetery - GPS Coordinates: 42.823383 by -93.262350

This monument is dedicated to veterans from the Civil War, Spanish-American War and World War I. It reads, "To the Memory of the Soldiers and Sailors of the United States." The words "Courage, Fidelity, Honor and Patriotism" are on the base of the monument. Old Chapin Cemetery is indeed an old and historic cemetery. Take 210th Street west of Chapin for 2 miles - then turn left or south on Mallard Avenue to the cemetery. The monument is hard to locate - at the old gate, go slightly left for 45 yards. Dows - Civil War Memorial at I-35 Rest Stop - GPS Coordinates: 42.672233 by -93.460433

This rest stop at exit 159 on I-35 has a Civil War theme with three tile pieces, letters from soldiers and a plaque. The six letters are shown below. It is dedicated to soldiers from Franklin County - many were at the battle of Pleasant Hill in Louisiana. With many people stopping here, it exposes a large number of persons to the Civil War. Hampton - Civil War Soldier - GPS Coordinates: 42.746100 by -93.199600

This monument is in the Hampton Cemetery. It is granite and about 18 feet high. It was erected by the J. W. McKenzie Woman's Relief Corps in 1906 at a cost of $1100. It is in the NE part of town off Highway 65. The monument is in the center of the cemetery on top of a hill. Photos taken 7/4/08 and 5/19/20.


Hampton - GAR Hall - GPS Coordinates: 42.742050 by -93.207133

This is a wonderful old GAR Hall, now called the Civil War Memorial Hall, which was completed in 1889. There is a soldier on guard on top of the building. On the interior, there are 5 marble plaques with names of soldiers from the area. There are also 5 stained glass windows and emblems on the ceiling. The inscription above the door is "1889 Memorial Hall." It is located east of the Franklin County Courthouse. Photos taken 3/14/08, 7/4/08 and 5/19/20.
