Clinton - Clinton County Freedom Rock - GPS Coordinates: 41.587778 by -91.016944

The east side of the Freedom Rock shows Medal of Honor Recipients Pvt. William Mayes of Company K, 11th Iowa Infantry and Specialist Salvatore Giunta who served in Afghanistan. The Freedom Rock sets on a beautiful spot overlooking the Mississippi on the Clinton waterfront. It is near the paddlewheel showboat and the lighthouse.

The citation for Pvt. Mayes reads "With one companion and under a fierce fire from the enemy and at short range, went to the rescue of a wounded comrade who had fallen between the lines and carried him to a place of safety." This occurred at Kennesaw Mountain on June 15, 1864. He lived at DeWitt in Clinton County and then moved to Los Angeles after the War.

The artist for the Freedom Rocks is Ray "Bubba" Sorensen who has completed these in all 99 Iowa counties. Photos taken 6/20/23.
